Captain Rohit Sharma Could Overtake This Big Record By MS Dhoni In T20I Series vs Afghanistan

India captain Rohit Sharma is in line to overtake a massive record that is currently held by MS Dhoni in T20Is.

MS Dhoni, who led India to its only T20 World Cup trophy in 2007, remains the most successful Indian T20I skipper, despite quitting white-ball captaincy at the start of January 2017.

MS Dhoni led India to 41 T20I match victories, which is the most for an Indian skipper in the shortest format. However, that record could be broken next month. Behind Dhoni is Rohit Sharma with 39 wins as India’s T20I skipper. Virat Kohli won 30 T20Is as India’s captain.

Rohit could have easily broken this record, but he had opted to rest from all T20I matches in 2023 to focus on ODI and Test cricket.

In January, India will host Afghanistan for a 3-T20I series. With Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav dealing with injuries, we may see Rohit captaining India against Afghanistan.

It is yet not clear who will lead India in next year’s T20 World Cup, but it looks that if Rohit Sharma is able to sustain his World Cup form during the IPL 2024 as well, then he will very likely captain India in the T20 WC, despite having been replaced as the Mumbai Indians skipper for Hardik Pandya.

Most T20I wins as a India’s captain:

1. MS Dhoni – 41 in 73 matches.
2. Rohit Sharma – 39* in 50 matches.
3. Virat Kohli – 30 in 50 matches.

In fact, if Rohit does captain India in the T20 World Cup, then he could become the most successful T20I skipper. Three former captains – Asghar Afghan, Babar Azam, and Eoin Morgan – hold the record of most T20I wins as skipper with 42 wins.

On the eve of the Test series against South Africa in Centurion, Rohit faced a question about whether he will be part of India’s side in next year’s T20 World Cup. Without mentioning the captaincy bit, Sharma cheekily said that he’s batting at his best.

“As a batter, I’m batting as well as I could. So yeah, whatever is in front of me, I would look forward to play whatever is in front of me,” the skipper said.
