Rohit Sharma and his Targeted Prep for Shaheen Afridi Showdown in Asia Cup 2023

Cricket aficionados mark your calendars; the Asia Cup 2023 is set to kick off with a scintillating clash between India and Pakistan. The highly anticipated match promises fireworks, as both teams have not met in a 50-over game since the 2019 ICC World Cup. Rohit Sharma’s men are leaving no leaf unturned, assembling in Alur for a specialized conditioning camp. The camp features rigorous fitness drills and net sessions to equip the Indian squad with the skills needed to dominate the Asia Cup.

One key subplot is the intriguing battle between Rohit Sharma and Pakistan’s pace sensation, Shaheen Shah Afridi. The left-arm speedster has notably been a thorn in the flesh for Rohit. They have faced each other thrice on the international stage, with Afridi successfully disrupting Rohit’s rhythm each time. To navigate this challenge, Rohit Sharma is employing a specific strategy in the training camp.

Rohit’s Previous Encounters with Afridi

Their first encounter was during the Asia Cup 2018. Rohit managed to score 19 runs off 18 balls against Afridi. Despite this moderate success, he eventually made a match-winning century. The story changed in the 2021 T20 World Cup, where Afridi dismissed Rohit for a golden duck. Even in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Rohit could only manage four runs off five balls against Afridi.

Specific Training to Counter Shaheen Afridi

To counter Afridi’s threat, Rohit has been practising with a left-arm pacer in the Alur camp. During a match simulation practice, the Indian captain specifically requested Aniket Choudhary to bowl at him. Although the 33-year-old left-arm pacer has never played for India, his bowling provides Rohit with some insights into what Afridi might offer.

Sanjay Bangar’s Analysis

Sanjay Bangar, the former India batting coach, offered his analysis of Rohit’s training strategy. According to him, the challenge lies in the angle at which a left-arm pacer delivers the ball. “The angle is crucial,” says Bangar. He elaborates that a left-arm bowler coming close to the stumps and swinging it inwards can be particularly tricky for a right-hand batsman.

“One doesn’t get many chances to play from that angle because most of the teams have a right-hand attack and opening bowling pairs. However, the angle is very crucial keeping in mind where you want to play as a batsman because when a left-arm bowler bowls from close to the stumps and brings it inwards towards the right-hand batsman,” said Bangar on Star Sports.

Rohit’s Formidable Challenge

The tactical practice against a left-arm pacer highlights Rohit’s meticulous approach to his game. It’s a testament to how crucial he believes this particular match-up could be in the context of India-Pakistan games. Afridi’s unique angle and swing offer a formidable challenge that could potentially be a game-changer in the Asia Cup.

Final Thoughts

With less than a week before the Asia Cup begins, Rohit’s targeted preparations showcase the seriousness with which the Indian team is taking each challenge. It will be interesting to see whether Rohit’s specialized training against left-arm pacers will help him conquer Afridi. Regardless, this intense prep signals to cricket fans everywhere that the upcoming Asia Cup will be a tournament for the ages. The India-Pakistan face-off will undoubtedly serve as a cracker of a campaign opener, setting the tone for a thrilling competition ahead.
