Virat Kohli, the talismanic batsman, lead the Indian cricket team for the last time in T20Is as captain and signed off with a thumping win over Namibia to end their campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup with a victory. However, his T20I career ended without any ICC trophy.

Virat Kohli had announced ahead of the tournament that he would be stepping down from his position as the Indian T20I captain.

After India’s disastrous start in the T20 World Cup 2021, with embarrassing defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand, a lot of fingers were pointed towards the captaincy approach of the Indian skipper. In fact, there were speculations regarding his future as the captain in the other two formats of the game as well. However, there were many cricketers and experts who came out in support of the modern legend.

Recently, former Indian cricketer and legendary batter Virender Sehwag also came out in support of Virat Kohli. Sehwag believes that the 33-year-old has been “brilliant” as captain and shouldn’t leave the leadership role in ODI and Tests format.

Well, it all happened when Sehwag was interacting with his fans on his official Facebook page and during that he reacted to a fan’s question on whether Kohli’s should step down as a skipper altogether. He said:

“This is Virat’s decision but I don’t think he should leave the rest two format’s captaincy. If he wants to play just as a player, it is his decision. I feel under his captaincy, India is playing good and his record as a captain is brilliant,”

He added:

“He is a good player, an aggressive captain and leads from the front. I reiterate that leaving or not leaving captaincy in ODIs and Tests should be his personal decision,”

While he heaped praises on Virat, but he insisted that there needs to be introspection over the side’s poor outing in ICC tournaments. For the unversed, ever since the 2013 Champions Trophy victory under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India is yet to win any ICC title. He said:

“I know we should support the team during bad times but it’s been a long time we haven’t won any major ICC tournament. India should definitely introspect on it. Winning bilateral series is one thing but people only remember you if you win world tournaments consistently,”
