The founder, first chairman and League Commissioner of the IPL, Lalit Modi, has labeled BCCI officials “fools” reacting to the reports of the board planning to introduce a T10 format IPL late this year or next year.
While the usual 20-over IPL is not going anywhere, nor this new format will affect it, the BCCI, according to a report in Moneycontrol.com, is pondering over launching a Tier-2 IPL in the 10-over per side format. Though the T10 format is not yet played internationally, there have been T10 leagues in UAE and Zimbabwe in recent years where some high-profile international stars have participated.
Only fools could come up with such an idea: Lalit Modi
Lalit Modi, who was the attached name with the IPL in its initial years and who held the Vice President post of the BCCI from 2005 till 2010, has called this idea of the BCCI’s the “most ridiculous” and absolute “madness”.
Reacting to this news in his tweet on January 1, Lalit Modi also alluded to the fans to the IPL agreement signed in 2008, stating that the board can’t organize any tournament that could be in “direct competition” with the IPL. However, this Tier-2 league, in T10 format, might not be what everyone thinks it would be.
Lalit Modi tweeted: “This is probably the most ridiculous scheme of all schemes. Sheer madness. Only fools could come up with such an idea when they have a golden goose in @IPL Anyway they can’t no direct competition to #ipl is allowed under the agreement signed in 2008.”

After being suspended by the BCCI in 2010, for 22 different charges, and in 2013 he was expelled from the BCCI, Lalit Modi moved to London where his wife’s family lives.
The report in the above-stated website stated: “BCCI secretary Jay Shah is working on a blueprint for the proposed league, and stakeholders, including potential sponsors, are giving a big thumbs up to the idea… The board has identified a window between September and October to slot the new cricket league.”
