Shikhar Dhawan, the Indian opener,  missed out on the ODIs and T20Is against the West Indies due to a knee injury he faced during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.  Following the injury, Dhawan was dropped from the squad and was replaced by KL Rahul, who is currently in a great form and has been giving back to back amazing performances.

In the just-concluded series against Sri Lanka as well, KL Rahul emerged out as the highest run-scorer from the Indian side getting 99 runs with a top score of 54. On the other hand, Shikhar Dhawan made a powerful comeback in the Indian team and scored 84 runs, including a half-century at the MCA stadium.

A new debate has begun all over surrounding the opening slots between KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan. KL Rahul is now being backed by a lot of people from the cricket fraternity for his consistent performances as the potential Indian opener. Many former cricketers including the likes of Gautam Gambhir and K Srikanth said that India should look beyond Dhawan and consider KL Rahul for the opening duties.

On the other hand, the skipper of Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli feels that both the player are very strong and it is great to have them both as it gives them an option to choose from.

Now, Shikhar Dhawan has also opened up about the contest between him and KL Rahul. Talking about the ongoing debate, Shikhar Dhawan said:

“All three players are doing very well. For Rohit, 2019 was fantastic. Rahul has also done very well in the last two-three months and he is a very good player. And now even I’m there in the picture. I did well today (3rd T20I vs Sri Lanka on Friday) as well,”

He claimed that it’s not his “headache”. He said:

“Well, this is not my headache. So, I’m not thinking too much about it because it’s not in my hands. I am happy that I did well in the two opportunities that I got,”

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli led Indian cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by 78 runs sealing the series by 2-0. T
