India’s veteran cricketer Shikhar Dhawan had been India’s mainstay in the white-ball format for a long time. He is still known for his records in the ICC tournaments. But after getting fallen out of India’s t20I side, having failed to make it to the 2021 T20 World Cup team, Dhawan’s only hope was the 50-over format, especially with the ODI World Cup just around the corner.
However, the rise of young talent in the Indian team and his dwindling form saw Dhawan lose his place in the Indian squad.
Dhawan was last seen playing for team India in December 2022 and is currently not being considered for a spot in the ODI World Cup squad of India. However, when Dhawan was asked upfront about the ongoing ‘Shubman Gill vs Shikhar Dhawan’ debate, his blockbuster response left the reporter stunned.
His inconsistent run in the ODI throughout 2022 saw him lose his place to young opener Shubman Gill, who made a solid impression with his performances on the tour of West Indies and Zimbabwe before he registered a double century against New Zealand at home earlier in January this year.
Shikhar Dhawan’s Interesting Take On ‘Gill vs Dhawan’ Debate
Meanwhile, in an interview with Aaj Tak, Dhawan was asked if he was the selector of the team or the captain and was picking a team, how many more chances would he has given himself. Responding to this, Dhawan gave a stunning reply. He said:
“I feel the way Shubman is (playing at the moment). Like he was playing two formats and performing well in Tests and T20s. He was playing more matches in the international circuit and I wasn’t.”
Further, the reporter clarified by asking that Dhawan wouldn’t have picked himself and would have gone with Gill instead, to this, the star opener said “Yes”.
Talking about Gill, the young and talented opener has been in a red-hot form off-lately. In 2023, he scored 624 runs in just nine innings at 78 with three centuries and one fifty.
