Shreyas Iyer made a brilliant comeback to the Indian ODI side with an entertaining, authoritative half-century in the first ODI against the West Indies on Friday at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.

Iyer, who was benched for the last two ODIs against England as Virat Kohli returned to the side, got his opportunity again at number 3 against West Indies and he did well to make it count, scoring 54 runs in 57 balls.

He was involved in a 94-run stand with Dhawan that came in 97 balls. Iyer was in particular severe while taking down West Indies’ spinners, irrespective of the match-ups, slamming a couple of sixes in his knock, in addition to the 5 boundaries he struck.

Shreyas Iyer gives a perfect reply to the crowd

Shreyas Iyer also got the opportunity to show off his dance moves – but, as he revealed, it was more of a befitting reply to the West Indian crowd that had been taunting him to ‘drop a catch’ before he eventually grabbed one.

Standing in the deep, a few meters in front of the crowd, Iyer took the catch of the dangerous-looking Shamarh Brooks, whose top edge to a Shardul Thakur short ball had flown to deep square leg, where Iyer safely completed the catch.

After finishing his catch, as Iyer moved forward to celebrate, he swiftly turned behind while making a dancing motion and smiled toward the stands.

So this had gotten the fans interested to know why Iyer did this dance move. Now, the 27-year-old himself had revealed that it was indeed a mocking gesture toward the crowd that he did – because the home crowd had been taunting him and taking jibes at him regularly when he was fielding in the deep.

The BCCI uploaded a video of Iyer and Mohammed Siraj having a chat after the game in which the pacer asked the batsman about his dance move and what was the matter going on between him and the crowd.

“Yes, they had been teasing me; they were saying ‘Drop a Catch’. So then when I took the catch, I responded by dancing how they dance,” Iyer said, before once again showing his stylish disco moves at Siraj’s request.
