Shubman Gill, a key batsman for the Indian cricket team, expressed his hope that his father would be proud of his batting performance in the fifth Test against England at Dharamsala’s Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium.
Gill faced criticism for his poor performance before the England Test series, with calls for his removal after failing in his initial three innings against England. However, he silenced critics with a brilliant 104 in Visakhapatnam, proving his worth to the team and selectors. Since then, he has consistently contributed valuable runs and currently stands as the series’ second-highest run-scorer, amassing 452 runs in 9 innings at an impressive average of 56.50.
Shubman Gill Made An Emotional Statement After Century
In the Dharamsala Test, Gill displayed exceptional skill, showcasing a positive approach against the English bowlers. He notably contributed to a remarkable 171-run partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma and reached his century milestone off just 137 balls.
Shubman Gill’s impressive innings came to an end when he was bowled by a brilliant delivery from James Anderson in the 63rd over. Gill had scored 110 runs from 150 balls, including 12 fours and 5 sixes. After achieving this milestone, the batsman felt proud and hoped his father, who has been his steadfast supporter, would share the same sentiment.
In his post-match statement, Shubman Gill expressed his desire for his father to feel proud of his outstanding century in the fifth Test. Gill said:
“It was my first time that he’s (talking about his dad) watching me play (in an international game). It was his vision (to play Test cricket) and I’m hoping that he is proud of my effort today.”
Gill’s remarkable six off James Anderson caught Ben Stokes by surprise on Day 2, sparking a buzz on social media. When questioned about the shot post-play, Gill remained tight-lipped about his conversation with Anderson following the powerful hit. Gill added:
“I thought the ball wasn’t doing much at that time and instinctively I wanted to go over the top (talking about the six he hit against Anderson) and put some pressure on him. I feel good every time I go out to bat and today I missed out on that ball (the one he got dismissed). I didn’t sight that ball properly, but I do feel good every time I go out to bat and hopefully I convert these starts into a big one. I think it would be better for both of us to keep that chat between us (when asked about the conversation between him and Anderson after the latter was taken for a six).
