With his place in the Test team on the line, Shubman Gill scored a terrific, gritty century, aided by plenty of luck, in India’s second innings of the second Test match against England in Visakhapatnam.
He carried India’s batting line-up in the second innings with his 104 in the team total of 255 and the next-best score was 45. Shubman Gill’s century meant India set a target of 399 runs for England on a pitch that has started to deteriorate and is offering turn and low bounce.
Earlier in India’s first innings, across Day 1 and the first session of Day 2, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal recorded a terrific double-century, becoming the third-youngest Indian men’s batter to score a double hundred. Jaiswal’s innings of 209 runs was the significant contributor to India’s eventual total of 396 runs.
Virender Sehwag makes a huge prediction about Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal
Former India opener Virender Sehwag has made a massive prediction about the 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal and 24-year-old Shubman Gill. Sehwag is expecting this young duo to dominate world cricket across the three formats or the coming decade.
Sehwag tweeted: “Glad to se two youngsters, both under 25 rising to the ocassion and standing out.
Very likely that these two will dominate world cricket for the next decade and more.”
Talking about Shubman Gill, the youngster was under huge pressure of having not scored big runs. He had been averaging only 25 since the start of 2023 until the start of his second innings in Vizag. He got lucky thrice today, but made his fortune count, scoring 104 runs in 147 balls, an innings laced with 11 fours and 2 sixes.
He formed crucial stands with Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel as India’s lead went past 350 but the lower-order collapsed. India are still in command with 399 runs to defend, a target which has never been chased down in India by a visiting team.
