SL vs IND: The Gautam Gambhir era has started with a bang as India won the three match T20I series against Sri Lanka by a margin of 3-0. The senior players with the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were back for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. However, India have not performed well with the bat in the ODI series and are trailing 1-0. India could not score 1 run of 14 balls in the first ODI and the match ended in a tie. In the second ODI, they could not chase down the target of 241 runs and lost the game.
SL vs IND: Ashish Nehra Criticises Gautam Gambhir For The ODI Series
Ashish Nehra criticised Gautam Gambhir for including players like Kohli and Rohit in the ODI series instead of giving the new guys the opportunities. However, he stated that Gambhir would have wanted to spend time with the senior players.
“The next series India play is 2-3 months later, a rare thing for us. So for players like Rohit and Kohli…I feel there was a better chance of giving opportunities to other players during this series. I know Gambhir is a new coach, and he wants to spend some time with the experienced players, but it isn’t like he doesn’t know the two of them,” Nehra said on Sony Sports Network.
Nehra also said that Gambhir is not a foreign coach who would want to get his relationship perfect with Kohli and Rohit. He already knows them inside out. Therefore, Gambhir should have given the opportunity to the new players and tried them out. However, he also stated that it is not a wrong decision but wanted Gauti to test the new players.
“He is not a foreign coach who wants to get his equation right with Kohli and Rohit. So it was a good opportunity for him to try out the new players, and Rohit and Kohli could play when the home season begins. I’m not saying it is a wrong approach, but it could have been one of the strategies in this series,” Nehra added.
