A big story has developed in the past few days involving Sourav Ganguly that has landed the BCCI President in deep waters.
Ganguly, who is already under the firing line from fans for his tussle with former captain Virat Kohli, is reported to have attended the senior men’s teams’ selection meeting going against the BCCI’s laws. For the unversed, a selection meeting should only be attended by the five selectors.
A week ago, renowned journalist K Shriniwas Rao, who has broken some of the major stories in Indian cricket, tweeted out that a certain powerful BCCI official had been “inviting himself to selection committee meetings” even though he knew it was not his place, making the selectors, captain, coach helpless.
For quite some time, a BCCI official kept inviting himself to selection committee meetings even when he knew he should have stayed away.
Captain and coach were helpless. Couldn’t do anything. He had no business being there.
I hope such instances are not repeated in the future.

Now, it has been learned that that BCCI official was none other than the BCCI President himself, Sourav Ganguly. Senior journalist Vikrant Gupta, of Aaj Tak and Sports Tak, has revealed this and raised a number of questions on Ganguly forcing himself in the selection meetings in the recent past.
Nikhil Naz, another veteran cricket journalist, pointed out that nowhere in the world the board president involves himself in the selection meetings, making Ganguly’s choice to do so baffling and questionable.
Vikrant further thought that whether was Ganguly, in his position as the BCCI President and with the immense power that comes with it, was undermining the national selectors and undermining the captain and coach.

This has left the fans fuming and have put a big doubt in their minds as to how will Indian cricket flourish and succeed going forward, having just been dealt with the Ganguly-Kohli saga, which, one would feel, is still not finished and there may be more to come.

The tenure of Ganguly in the past year has come under heavy scrutiny. Even before his public contradiction with Virat Kohli, Ganguly and the board was receiving plenty of flak for the way women’s cricket was treated with fewer than expected matches. For the position the domestic players had been put regarding their payments and for the cancellation of Ranji Trophy last season and its postponement this season.
This revelation – about Ganguly attending the selection meeting against the BCCI’s constitution – might be the last straw in his controversial tenure.
