Legendary Indian skipper and current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly hailed the Indian skipper Virat Kohli for being a ‘true asset’ to the Indian cricket team. Virat Kohli, who is hailed as the modern legend of the game, had announced that he would be stepping down as team India’s captain from the shortest format of the game following the ICC T20 World Cup.
Virat Kohli had taken over the role of India’s T20I skipper in the year 2017 after MS Dhoni had left the role. This will also be the first time (also the last one) that Virat Kohli will be seen leading the national cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Though he is hailed as one of the greatest batsmen, Virat hasn’t been able to get his hands on an ICC title yet.
Virat will continue to play as a batsman in the shortest format of the game while leading the team in the Test and ODI formats.
Sourav Ganguly via an official BCCI statement thanked Virat for his performance as T20I skipper for team India and wished him all the luck ahead. He said:
“Virat has been a true asset for Indian Cricket and has led with aplomb. He is one of the most successful captains in all the formats. The decision has been made keeping in mind the future roadmap”
“We thank Virat for his tremendous performance as the T20I Captain. We wish him all the best for the upcoming World Cup and beyond and hope that he continues to score plenty of runs for India”,
Meanwhile, BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah has reassured the fans of Virat Kohli and team India that the transition would be smooth and the management was all set for this situation. Shah was quoted in BCCI’s official statement saying:
“We have a clear roadmap for Team India. Considering the workloads and ensuring that we have smooth transition, Mr Virat Kohli has decided to step down as T20I Captain after the upcoming World Cup. I have been in discussions with Virat and the leadership team for the last six months and the decision has been thought through.”
“Virat will continue to contribute as a player and as a senior member of the side in shaping the future course of Indian cricket,”
