The “reports” from “sources” of Sourav Ganguly to play in the second season of the Legends League Cricket – a T20 style tournament involving a spate of former cricketers from all around the world – had spread like wildfire on social media on Wednesday.

So much that the 50-year-old BCCI President himself felt the need to clarify the confusion and for once and all banish all the rumours.

Ganguly has unequivocally denied the reports of him returning to the cricket field as a player. The former India captain, who had suffered a minor heart attack last year, confirmed to PTI that he isn’t part of any such league.

“I am not a part of any Legends League. The news is not true,” Ganguly told PTI.

However, this comment and confirmation from Ganguly contradicted an earlier statement from the tournament’s organisers that said that Ganguly will play in the league. The statement had even quoted Ganguly as saying, “It is going to be a lot of fun playing with other legends.” There was even a social media post on the official handle of LLC, announcing the signing of the BCCI president.

Ganguly’s last professional appearance as a cricketer was way back in 2015 when he featured in a couple of games in the Cricket All-Stars Series, held in Los Angeles, between Sachin’s Blasters and Warner’s Warriors turning up for his former teammate Sachin Tendulkar’s team.

A number of ex-cricketers have so far confirmed their availability for the second edition of the Legends League Cricket – including  Virender Sehwag, Shane Watson, Eoin Morgan, Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Muttiah Muralitharan, Mashrafe Mortaza, Matt Prior, Romesh Kaluwitharana and Monty Panesar.

Players from different countries have been divided into three teams – India, Asia and Rest of the World.
