The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 is set to take place in the Caribbean and the USA this June has stirred speculation around who will assume the captaincy for Team India. While Rohit Sharma, India’s official captain across formats, has not formally retired from T20Is, he has been notably absent from the T20 team alongside senior player Virat Kohli since the 2022 T20 World Cup.

During this period, the reins were temporarily taken up by Hardik Pandya, the official limited-overs vice-captain, who is currently recovering from an injury and missed recent T20 series against Australia and South Africa. Suryakumar Yadav stepped in as captain during Pandya’s absence but is now dealing with an injury sustained in the series against South Africa.

Reports suggest the return of Kohli and Rohit for the upcoming T20 series against Afghanistan. The uncertainty surrounding the captaincy adds an intriguing layer to India’s T20 World Cup preparations.

Former India cricketer and BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly wants Rohit Sharma to lead India in the T20 World Cup 2024. He also wants Virat Kohli to feature as a player. He said: “Of course Rohit should captain the team in the T20I World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player, nothing will happen (to return after 14 months).”

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in T20 cricket has been marked by strategic brilliance and calm leadership. As the skipper of the Indian cricket team, he has showcased a remarkable ability to make astute decisions under pressure. Known for his tactical acumen, Sharma exhibits a proactive approach on the field, effectively utilizing resources and adapting to dynamic match situations.

His keen understanding of players’ strengths and the opposition’s weaknesses contributes to cohesive team performances. Sharma’s calm demeanor instills confidence in the squad, fostering a positive and focused team environment. Notably, under his captaincy, India has witnessed successful campaigns, emphasizing his capacity to inspire and lead. His batting prowess combined with shrewd captaincy makes Rohit Sharma a potent force in T20 cricket.
