In a significant turn of events, former Sri Lankan cricketer and World Cup winner Sachithra Senanayake has been taken into custody. He faces allegations of match-fixing during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL). Voluntarily surrendering to the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry, Senanayake is now awaiting a court appearance. Remarkably, this makes him the first cricketer in Sri Lanka to be prosecuted for such an offense.
The allegations stem from reports that Senanayake contacted two other cricketers during the inaugural LPL season in 2020. These interactions reportedly took place via phone calls from Dubai. Consequently, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court imposed a travel ban on him in August 2023, intensifying the ongoing investigation.
Acting upon orders from the Attorney General, the Special Investigation Unit formally charged Senanayake. This led to the imposition of a three-month travel restriction on the cricketer. The charges come as a heavy blow to a player who has long been a part of Sri Lanka’s cricketing landscape.
Senanayake, now 38 years old, vehemently denies the accusations. He argues that the charges are not only baseless but also a calculated attack on his and his family’s reputation. The cricketer has been on the defensive, attempting to clear his name since the allegations emerged.
Over his career, Senanayake represented Sri Lanka in various formats. Specifically, he played in one Test match, 49 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 24 T20 Internationals between 2012 and 2016. He made a name for himself as a proficient off-spin bowler, often lauded for his impeccable line and length. In total, Senanayake secured 53 wickets in ODIs and 25 wickets in T20 games, contributing to his team’s successes.
