Former Rajasthan Royals captain and Australian legend Steve Smith is set to make his entry in the IPL 2024. But not as a player; Smith will be joining the broadcasting and commentary team for this year’s tournament.
Star Sports has announced the commentary panel for IPL 2024. Apart from the regular commentators, the panel this time also includes Steve Smith, the Aussie star who is keen to make his presence felt in the biggest T20 league in the world, of which he was once part as a player.
The IPL 2024 season will kick off on March 22 at the Chepauk with defending champions CSK hosting Faf du Plessis’ RCB.
Star Sports has announced an epic English commentary panel which includes legends Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Matthew Hayden, Kevin Pietersen, Danny Morrison, Harsha Bhogle, and Steve Smith to join the team. It is, though, not confirmed yet whether the Aussie star will come to India or will do commentary from Sydney. Star Sports has, over the past year, used holograms to have some of their overseas stars join them from their home country digitally.
Steve Smith has not played in the IPL since 2021
Smith was once the first retention choice of the Rajasthan Royals when they returned to the IPL. He led them but ahead of the IPL 2021 season, not only he was replaced as the captain with Sanju Samson, RR released him. Ricky Ponting got Smith in for the IPL 2021 season at Delhi Capitals, but since then, Smith has gone unsold in the IPL auctions.
He did win the T20 World Cup 2021 with Australia in the UAE, but did little with the bat. He is still in the scheme of things for the Australian team as far as the T20 World Cup 2024 is concerned.
