Sunil Gavaskar Talked About Virat’s Decision: The Indian skipper Virat Kohli left everyone stunned after he dropped a bombshell on the Indian cricket fans by announcing his decision to step down as India’s T20I captain after the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. Virat will continue to play as a batsman in the shortest format of the game while leading the team in the Test and ODI formats.

Sunil Gavaskar Revealed The Reason Behind Virat Kohli’s Decision To Step Down From T20 Captaincy

On 17th September, Virat Kohli took to his social media to make the announcement via a lengthy note. Kohli also cited workload from the last 8-9 years as one of the reasons behind his decision. He also added that he took the decision after having some important discussions with Indian head coach Ravi Shastri and senior batsman Rohit Sharma.

Ever since the announcement was made, social media has been buzzing with reactions from fans and cricketers. Among many, former India opener and legendary Sunil Gavaskar also gave his expert opinion on the matter. Gavaskar said that everything came down to the decision after Virat had a conversation with Ravi Shastri, Rohit, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, and other selectors.

Gavaskar also said that the office-bearers of the BCCI might have hinted to him that they were not happy with his white-ball captaincy. He said:

“I just read Kohli’s letter. He took the final decision after having a lot of discussions with Ravi Shastri, Rohit, Ganguly, and selectors. There were a lot of talks from the past six months on his white-ball captaincy. He might have got a hint that BCCI and selectors aren’t impressed with his white ball captaincy. This could be the reason why he left T20I captaincy and decided to give leadership to someone else,”

He added:

“He mentioned that he wants to lead in Tests and ODIs. It’s up to selectors now to decide his ODI captaincy. There’s no question on his Test captaincy. We should keep a watch if there will be a change in ODI captaincy”
