Sussex Skipper Cheteshwar Pujara Faces Ban And County Championship Penalty

Sussex County Cricket Club’s skipper, Cheteshwar Pujara, is facing the consequences of a one-match ban handed down by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This disciplinary action comes after his team violated regulations set by the governing body for professional conduct. In addition to the captain’s penalty, Sussex County Cricket Club has been hit with a 12-point penalty in the ongoing County Championship.
Sussex’s downfall began when they accumulated their fourth fixed penalty in a single season. The team’s captain, Cheteshwar Pujara, opted to accept the charges without contesting them. The players responsible for breaching the code of conduct, namely Tom Haines, Jack Carson, and Ari Karvelas, will not be part of the team for the upcoming game.
The ECB wasted no time in releasing an official statement, explaining the rationale behind Sussex’s punishment. The statement read, “By virtue of receiving two additional fixed penalties in the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Leicestershire on 13 September 2023, Sussex CCC has now met the threshold of four fixed penalties in one season, having previously received two fixed penalties in the LV County Championship earlier in the season.”
Sussex County Cricket Club also issued an official statement, confirming the absence of Tom Haines, Jack Carson, and Ari Karvelas from the next game. They stated, “Tom Haines and Jack Carson have been made unavailable for selection by Head Coach Paul Farbrace due to their conduct in the previous game. Ari Karvelas is also unavailable until an investigation into an incident in the Leicestershire game has been concluded.”
As a result of the ECB’s disciplinary actions, Sussex County Cricket Club has experienced a significant setback in the County Championship standings. They have plummeted from their third-place position to fifth, with a total of 124 points.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s recent woes go beyond his suspension from Sussex County Cricket Club. The Indian batsman’s troubles began when he was dropped from the Indian Team following a string of poor performances. Pujara’s struggles were notably evident in the ICC World Test Championship Final, where he failed to make a substantial impact. Subsequently, he found himself excluded from the squad for the West Indies Tests.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conveyed their intentions to provide opportunities for younger players, which led to Pujara’s omission. However, they made it clear that the doors were not permanently closed for him. The question that looms now is whether Pujara will be granted another chance to redeem himself and rejoin the Indian Team.
Cheteshwar Pujara’s cricketing journey has hit a rough patch, with a one-match ban from Sussex County Cricket Club and an extended absence from the Indian Team. The future remains uncertain for the talented batsman as he navigates these challenges and strives for a resurgence in his career.
