T20 World Cup 2014: To Yuvraj or Not To Yuvraj?

India has had a decent start to their campaign in the T20 World Cup, winning their first two matches convincingly. Bowlers , much to the surprise of the cricket fans have performed well and have won the matches for India, something very unusual for India as they rely mainly on their batsman for this. Inspite of all this, there is a weak link prevailing in the team and surprisingly , it’s Yuvraj Singh.

Yuvraj’s performance has been over shadowed by India’s win. Of late, Yuvraj has not been able to do anything worth enough to get a place in the 11. Past performances cannot always be a criteria to be in the team, especially when a bunch of youngsters are performing well .Even Dhoni has admitted that Yuvraj is not in very good touch.

Looking at the composition of the present Indian team, they are more likely to go with 3 spinners in every match. It has worked well for them and even Raina has chipped in with few overs. But, what when the pitch doesn’t offer that much assistance to spinners. India may need a backup pacer and Binny fits in well there. His T20 exploits as a finisher is well known and his bowling will add a new variety in the line up.

The other factor that is working against Yuvraj is his bowling.

His bowling form is nowhere close to his 2011 World Cup one. Adding to this, Dhoni has preferred Raina over him in the tournament and has worked well for him.Yuvraj , with his current batting form cannot be expected to be in the 11 only by the virtue of his batting.

The only thing in the favour of Yuvraj is the support of the team management and his old habit of coming back strongly after rough phases. He has donre it in the past on numerous occasions, be it the 2011 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup( where he came strongly after some poor starts to the tournament).

But all the fans can hope for is a roaring Yuvraj leading India to victory. Or else, this might be the end of another cricketer of Gangulian era.
