Two-time world champions West Indies faced a humiliating exit from T20 World Cup 2022 on Friday. Ireland registered a stunning nine-wicket against West Indies, pushing the most successful team in the competition’s history out of the Super 12 contention. West Indies, which won the title in 2012 and 2016, is the only side to win the coveted trophy twice, however, this time West Indies got knocked out in the first round of the tournament.
The Windies skipper Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bat first in the game, following which they posted only 146 runs for 5. Chasing the target runs, Ireland managed to reach home in 17.3 overs and advanced to the Super-12 stage, putting an end to the Windies’ journey.
With wickets continuing to fall at the other end, Brandon King manifested a respectable first innings total for the Windies with his 48-ball-62 that included six fours and one maximum. Odean Smith also played a stunning cameo of 12-ball cameo of 19 as the 2012 and 2016 winners finished their 20 overs at 146/5. Brandon King’s fighting knock of 62* runs off 48 helped Windies post a respected total. However, he lacked support from other batters, and eventually, the team got knocked out of the tournament. The defeat also marked West Indies’ sixth out of eight matches in the competition since they won the 2016 final at Eden Gardens.
Meanwhile, the fans on social media were disappointed over the two-time champions being knocked out from the first round of the ongoing tournament. Check out the reactions of the fans:
#Westindies management have to look into their structure where players don’t feel excited enough to play for the WI ..too much of focus on the leagues throughout the year serve their financial needs.
