The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has a strict policy of not allowing Indian cricketers to participate in T20 leagues around the world. This decision is well-known in the cricketing community and has been a topic of discussion among players and experts. Recently, South African cricketing legend AB de Villiers also weighed in on this issue in one of his interviews.
AB de Villiers sees a lot of merit in the BCCI’s stance of not allowing Indian players to feature in overseas T20 leagues and believes that this policy is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. He stated that “I would love to see it happening very soon but you don’t see Indian players being released for leagues around the world. So I don’t know if that will ever change.”
The BCCI’s decision is driven by the desire to make sure that the Indian players have the exposure they need to succeed at the international level, and to win World Cups. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is considered to be the best league in the world and the BCCI wants to ensure that Indian players are able to participate in it and gain valuable experience. Additionally, the BCCI also wants to make sure that the Indian players are not overworked and have enough time to rest and recover between matches.
AB de Villiers is also a part of the commentary panel in the ongoing SA20 T20 league. The inaugural season of the South African cricket league has come to a halt as South Africa are hosting England in a three-match ODI series at home. SA20 action will resume from February 2 with a match between Durban’s SuperGiants and MI Cape Town.
15 players out of the 16-member squad of the Proteas who are part of the ODI series against England are a part of SA20. The league is nearly at its final stage with all the semi-finalists of the tournament almost decided. This gives a good insight on how these leagues are contributing to the development of cricketing talent in different countries.
AB de Villiers, who is widely referred to as Mr. 360 for his ability to hit cricketing shots in every direction of the ground, is one of the most respected and successful cricketers in the world.
