Three Long-Standing Cricket Records Which Can Be Broken In 2020: The new year 2020 suggests that it will be a great year for cricket because it contains 2020. The shortest format of the game has improved leaps and bounds in the last decade and won’t stop any time soon. As a result, the ICC has organized two T20 World Cups this year (Men and Women) and another one next year.

Cricket is reaching places where it wouldn’t have reached a few years ago. 2019 was a great year for cricket fans and there is a lot more in store for 2020. Every new year brings an opportunity to break the old records and create new ones. Last year, the Indian team won the most consecutive Test series at home.

Rohit Sharma scored the most number of centuries by an opener and many such records were broken. Even in 2020, there will be a lot of records that will be broken. So, on that note, let’s have a look at three records that can be broken in 2020.

  1. Most appearances in T20Is

Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik currently holds the record with 111 T20 matches at the international level. India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma isn’t too far behind with 104 matches. India plays a lot T20 matches this year and even though he has been rested for the Sri Lanka series he will play more than 7 T20s this year.

Shoaib Malik isn’t finding a spot in the Pakistan side at the moment and looking at his age he wouldn’t play many more matches after this. Rohit Sharma has the opportunity to break that record and keep the record for a while until the next player comes along.

At the end of this year, the record of most appearances in T20Is will be held by an Indian.

  1. Fastest to 100 T20I wickets

Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga is the only bowler who has more than 100 T20I wickets and he reached the milestone in 76 matches. The other bowlers who are close to the 100-wicket mark are mostly spinners. Shahid Afridi ended his career with 98 wickets whereas Shakib has 92 but he has already played 76 matches.

The only bowler who can break this record is the spin wizard from Afghanistan – Rashid Khan. He has picked up 84 wickets in just 45 matches at an average of 12.52. These are incredible numbers for any bowler. If he picks up 16 wickets in the next 30 matches then he will break the record easily.

With the T20 World Cup scheduled later this year, there is a high chance of this record being broken in 2020.

  1. Most centuries as ODI captain

Australia’s former captain Ricky Ponting currently holds this record with 22 ODI centuries as a captain of the Australian team. There are no points for guessing as to who is in line to break that record. India’s current captain – Virat Kohli is second on that list with 21 ODI centuries as captain.

Kohli has hit 43 ODI centuries out of which 21 are as captain. He needs just two more centuries to break this record and it is inevitable that he will break it this year. He needs 7 more centuries to break Tendulkar’s record and if he is in full flow then he might even break that record till the end of the year.
