Australian skipper Tim Paine launched an expletive-filled rant at on-field umpire Paul Wilson over the Decision Review System, on Day 3 of the ongoing third test match against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The skipper lost his cool and was involved in a furious exchange with the umpire after Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara survived a bat-pad appeal. Tim Paine, who is also the wicketkeeper, was so angry that he didn’t even shy away from launching an expletive-filled rant, asking for some “consistency,” from the umpire.
Pujara was batting on 13 when he survived a bat-pad review off Nathan Lyon’s bowling. There was no proof that the Indian star had edged the ball and the on-field umpire gave his decision in favor of Pujara. However, Tim Paine and Nathan Lyon were very confident and thus lost their cool.
Paine sent the not-out call to the third umpire after the catch was turned down. Third umpire Bruce Oxenford looked at the offside hotspot and decided to stick with the not-out call, which prompted a verbal barrage from Paine. It won’t be surprising if ICC sanctions Tim Paine for his comments.
Paine didn’t shy away from giving Wilson a piece of his mind. Replying to Tim, on-field umpire Wilson said: “I’m not the third umpire” before the Australian skipper said: “There’s no f***ing consistency Blocker. There’s a thing that goes past it”
After the incident, Tim Paine was asked about his verbal exchange with the umpire, he revealed:
“I did not hit the ball in the second innings, it was pretty clear from my reaction, yeah I thought we had a pretty same example on day two with Pujara, it sets a precedent,”
He added:
“He did not look at enough replays to see that there was a gap between the bat and ball, the line itself had started before it passed my bat and then it finished again so it was just a lot of things that did not add up for me, I don’t think he took the time to look at the evidence, technology was okay for me,”
