On Sunday, November 26, SRH released Harry Brook, whom they had acquired for 13.25 crore, ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions. Meanwhile, Tom Moody, the former coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, has expressed the belief that SRH might regret their decision to part ways with Harry Brook before the upcoming Indian Premier League mini-auction on December 19.

Brook emerged as Hyderabad’s priciest acquisition at the IPL 2023 auction, with the team spending a substantial ₹13.25 crore to secure the services of the young talent.

Harry Brook had a challenging IPL campaign in 2023. Aside from an unbeaten 100-run innings against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), it was an overall forgettable debut season for the 24-year-old.

Speaking to Star Sports, Tom Moody said, “SRH may regret not securing Harry Brook in the auction at a lower price, as he is an incredible talent. “

“It is important to note that during his debut season in the IPL, he was made to bat out of position in 80% of the games. Although he was bought as a middle-order No. 4 batsman, he was forced to open the innings, which he had never done before in T20 cricket.”

Tom Moody suggested that the Hyderabad think tank erred by frequently deploying Brook out of position in most of the IPL 2023 games.

“Sometimes, it’s not only the player’s fault for not performing well, but the franchise is also responsible for how they utilize them. It’s similar to selecting a striker in a football game and expecting them to perform well in defence position throughout the season, then being surprised when they don’t excel.”

Tom Moody went on to express that SRH’s substantial investment in acquiring Harry Brook suggested a long-term commitment to the dynamic batter, possibly for at least a decade. However, the current situation implies that the franchise may have lost faith in the English cricketer.

“I can’t understand it. But the debate would have been quite simple,” Moody stated. “It would have been a case of, do we look at Harry Brook being a franchise player, a one-club player, or do we want instant results? Harry Brook is one of the most exciting young players in world cricket in all three formats of the game.”

He added: “So, Sunrisers making the decision to pick him up at the auction at a significant level raised our eyebrows. But you are making that decision based around the fact that he is going to be with us for the next 10 years, and we are going to win three titles with him in those next 10 years. So, clearly, they have lost faith in that thought process.”

The IPL 2024 auction is scheduled for December 19 in Dubai. SRH will enter the auction with ₹34 crore in their purse, aiming to fill six slots, including three overseas players.
