Rohit Sharma’s Team India became the first Asian team ever to win a Test match in Cape Town when they thrashed South Africa by 7 wickets at Newlands, to end the series in a 1-1 draw.
This was India’s 7th Test match in Cape Town, and finally, the team managed to breach fortress Newlands of the Proteas, where no Asian team had won a Test match. This is only the second time that India will return from South Africa without losing a Test series – India drew in the 2010-11 Test series, while have lost all other Test rubbers in the Rainbow Nation.
The Cape Town has come under scrutiny for his extremely seam-friendly pitch, which meant that the match finished in only 642 deliveries, making it the shortest completed Test match in history. 23 wickets fell on Day 1, and 10 more until an hour after Lunch on Day 2. All wickets went to pacers.
Mohammed Siraj took a six-wicket haul in the first innings, claiming the Man of the Match, and Jasprit Bumrah, who also took a six-wicket haul in the second innings, bagged the Man of the Series award for his 12 wickets in 3 innings at an average of only 12.
This historic victory by Team India vs South Africa in Cape Town gave way to funny memes:
India bowled South Africa out for 55 runs. India were in a good position in their first innings at 153/4, but suffered a shocking collapse, losing 6 wickets for 0 runs. Yet, the 98-run lead proved to be decisive as South Africa, despite Aiden’s Markram’s stunning century, could give India a target of 79 runs.

Captain Rohit Sharma said: “Obviously, a great feat but I have said that we have to learn from mistakes we did at Centurion. The boys got rewarded for their bowling effort. We knew it was going to be a short game and getting that first innings lead was important.”
” A lot of credit should go to Bumrah, Siraj, Mukesh and Prasidh. Whenever we come to this part of the world, we know that it’s going to be challenging but we did well when we came here last time.”
