Glenn Maxwell reined supreme as his century downed Ruturaj Gaikwad’s maiden T20I ton in a last-ball thriller in Guwahati.
Glenn Maxwell is due to return to Australia tomorrow but he’s given his side plenty today as this victory keeps Australia alive in the 5-match series, which now stands 2-1.
With 16 runs needed in the last 4 balls, Maxwell smashed Prasidh Krishna for 6, 4, 4, 4. On the penultimate delivery, he notched up his century off 47 balls, equalling Aaron Finch and Josh Inglish for the fastest T20I century by an Australian men’s player.
This was Glenn Maxwell’s 3rd T20I century, helping Australia chase down the target of 223 on the last ball of the chase. Prasidh Krishna went for 68 runs in his 4 overs, which is the most by an Indian bowler in a T20I match.
Earlier, Gaikwad scored 123 runs in 57 balls, and 30s from Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma propelled India to 222. However, the partnership between Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Wade of 91* (40), in which Maxwell scored 57 (24), took Australia over the line.
Twitter erupted with memes as Glenn Maxwell propelled Australia to a stunning win in 3rd T20I vs India:
Left-arm pacer Jason Behrendroff was given the player of the match award for his exceptional bowling figures of 1/12 in 4 overs in a high-scoring encounter. But Jason Behrendroff said he would like to give his Potm award to Maxwell.
Jason Behrendroff said: “It’s remarkable, main thing is we got the win. Don’t have too many words at the moment after what just unfolded. It’s a happy hunting ground, have played here twice. Haven’t gone for too many runs. It swung early on, so I took advantage of the conditions. Want to win the series ideally and we are one step closer to that. We need to take that momentum going forward. I’ll give it (Player of the Match) to Maxi, he got us over the line, also it’s his 100th T20I game.”
