A captain plays an important role, irrespective of the game. From carrying the responsibility of the team on their shoulders to driving the team to glory with their strategies, tactics, and intelligence, a skipper of any game has to look after a lot of things.

When it comes to the game of cricket, over the years, we have seen some uniquely skilled captains who emerged out to be the greatest skippers for their countries.

1. Ricky Ponting – 220:




The legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting is one of the greatest skippers to have captained the Australian cricket team. Ricky has led the Australian side 324 times in international cricket, out of which, Ponting has won 220 of those games, which means he had an astonishing win percentage of 67.90%.

2. Mahendra Singh Dhoni – 178:

MS Dhoni is hailed as one of the most successful skippers to have ever played for team India. He took the Indian cricket team to the number 1 position, having won all the ICC trophies including the ICC Cricket World Cup, ICC World T20, and ICC Champions Trophy.

Dhoni holds a special record. He led the Indian cricket team 332 times in International cricket, out of which he won 178 games, which means he has a winning percentage of 53.61%.

3. Graeme Smith – 163:

Though Graeme Smith isn’t an ICC Cricket World cup winning skipper, however, he is undoubtedly the best captain his country has ever produced. He led the Proteas side 286 times in International cricket, out of which, he won 163 of those games. This also means that he has a winning percentage of 56.99% – more than Dhoni’s.

4. Allan Border – 139:

One of the greatest cricketers to have ever played for the Australian cricket team, Allan Border might not be as successful as Ricky Ponting when it comes to being the skipper, but he was still one of the best.

He led the Australian cricket team 271 times in international cricket, out of which the team won 139 games. The winning percentage of Allan Border is 51.29%. Australia also drew as many as 38 games, under the leadership of Allan Border.

5. Stephen Fleming – 128:

Another cricketer in the list, who wasn’t lucky enough to get his hands on the prestigious ICC World Cup. Fleming led the New Zealand cricket team in 303 matches, out of which he won 128 of those games, which means he had a winning percentage of 44.55%.
