A team is as good as its captain. Behind the success story of a team is a tale of the captaining leading from the front frequently. Even the best of batsmen in the modern day cricket which have been summed up the ‘Fab 4’ are also amazing captains besides being stalwart cricketers.

These Fab Four include Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Joe Root. All of these great captains have changed the fortunes of their teams and have always led from the front.

So here we take a look at the best knocks in a test innings by a captain. These knocks are the best endorsement of ‘Leading from the front’ and these are the greatest knocks by captains in a test inning.

On top of the list is Brian Lara’s marathon knock of an unbeaten 400. This is the highest score by any batsman in a test innings. Surprisingly there’s no Indian in the top 5 but we would trust Virat Kohli to make it to the top 5 pretty soon.

2. Mahela Jayawardene: 374

The former Sri Lankan skipper scored 374 runs against South Africa in Colombo. He achieved this feat in the year 2006.
3. Mark Taylor: 334*

Top 5 Scores In A Test Innings By A Captain

The former Aussie Skipper is a big contributing factor to Australia’s domination in world cricket. Mark Taylor played a staggering knock of 334 at Peshawar against Pakistan in 1998.
4. Graham Gooch: 333

Top 5 Scores In A Test Innings By A Captain

He’s on of the legends to have ever played the game. The former captain of England scored this triple century against India at Lords. It came in the year 1990.
5. Michael Clarke: 329*

Top 5 Scores In A Test Innings By A Captain

Clarke struck this magnificent triple century as a captain against India at Sydney. Clark gave this great example of leading from the front in the year 2012.
