Despite being out of contention for a while, KL Rahul is back to the squad for the Sri Lankan tour. However, Murali Vijay is one prominent name missing due to injury. There are a few players who have missed out on this tour thanks to the abundance of talent already at Kohli’s disposal. However, here are 6 Indian openers who can take over.

Gautam Gambhir:

Gautam Gambhir is one opener who has just not got the rub of the green in the past few years. Despite putting in some decent Ranji performances, he has just not been able to re-establish himself in the top of the Indian batting line-up and Indian cricket might just have seen the last of the Delhi man.

Murali Vijay:

Murali Vijay is one player who is a sure opener the moment he is fit. Problem is, he has not been able to get back to full fitness since the Australian series and has been sidelined for almost half a year now. He will miss the Sri Lanka series but should be back post that.r

Shreyas Iyer:

Still young and hungry, Shreyas Iyer is another player who has a great chance of being India’s next opener. The Mumbai based batsman has grown from strength to strength over the years and also scored a century playing for India A against Australia last year.

Unmukt Chand:

The popular Delhi batsman is another player who has the potential to break into the squad. Though he is no longer the prospect he was as a teenager, he can still make it. He is a good limited overs player but will need to work really hard to make it to the Test setup.

Akhil Herwadkar:

Another Mumbaikar who has the skill-set to break into the top is Akhil Herwadkar. Still only 21, the batsman hit 879 runs for his team in the Ranji Trophy, making people sit up and take notice of his talent. He has a long road ahead, but all the time in the world.

Top 8 Opening Batsmen In India

Ishan Kishan:

From Dhoni’s land, Kishan is one cricketer who has the right attributes to make it big. Despite being relatively young in age, he has applied himself brilliantly and many former players have marked him for greatness.

Shikhar Dhawan:

Shikhar Dhawan is a very flamboyant opening batsman who can change the game on its head in a matter of few overs. In the last 4 years or so, he has worked extremely hard on his batting and established himself as one of the best opening batsmen in the world.

KL Rahul

KL Rahul is one of the most exciting batsmen to watch in world cricket. He is technically  very sound and can make quick adjustments according to the need of the format. He is surely one to watch out for in the coming years.
