Explained: Here’s Why Jay Shah Can Be The Next BCCI President

Jay Shah

Things are moving fast and forward for the powerful duo of Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah. Just a day after the Supreme Court granted BCCI’s request to allow their administrators to continue in their role without the need of the cooling-off period, it has been learned that Ganguly will stand for the elections for the ICC Chairman’s post, and that would mean Jay Shah to get the BCCI President’s position.

On September 14, the Supreme Court agreed to allow the amendments in the cooling-off restrictions for BCCI and state officials, thereby allowing both BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, and the BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah, to extend their respective tenures till 2025.

Just a day after that, the Indian Express reported that Jay Shah could be BCCI’s next boss with as many as 15 state associations backing him for the top job.

“It’s high time Shah takes charge of the Indian board, and all associations are ready to back him,” a key member of a state association was reported as saying. The state associations are in praise of Shah for managing to conduct the IPL in the past three seasons amid the pandemic.

Sourav Ganguly could be the fifth Indian to become ICC Chairman

Shah’s elevation to the top of the board would be possible because it is believed, according to a report in NDTV, that not only Ganguly will contest the election for the ICC Chairman position but also is expected to win it! Greg Barkley is the current ICC Chair and whose tenure will expire in the coming months.

In case Ganguly becomes the ICC President, he would become the fifth Indian to become the ICC Chairman after Shashank Manohar, N Srinivasan, Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar.

In October 2019, Ganguly was elected as BCCI president and Shah, who is the son of India's Home Minister Amit Shah, as Secretary. Arun Dhumal, brother of former BCCI president Anurag Thakur, who is also the Indian Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, was elected as BCCI treasurer while Jayesh George was elected as the joint secretary.
