“Any Player Can Bat Like De Villiers Now”: Robin Uthappa Makes A Big Statement

Robin Uthappa Talks About Batting Evolution: Senior India and Chennai Super Kings batsman Robin Uthappa opened up with his views on the evolution of batting in the past six-seven years in cricket.

Thanks to the T20 format which demands the batters to take more risks and be innovative in ways to find the boundaries, Uthappa reckoned more and more batters have tried to access the 360-degree range that someone like AB de Villiers used to do with perfection.

Robin Uthappa feels batsmen’s styles have changed since 2015

Robin Uthappa was one of India’s early white-ball specialists and amongst the cleanest hitters during his time at the helm. Uthappa was a crucial member of the Indian side that won the 2007 T20 World Cup, and then he won IPL titles with KKR and CSK.

Uthappa, who has been in the T20 game for over a decade-and-a-half, asserted that the batting styles have undergone a significant transformation since 2015.

“The style has changed a lot since my days, and the game has evolved quite a lot. The game has gone through evolution, especially in the last seven years. I feel that the game has evolved so much and so fast since 2015. Now each and every player is a 360-degree player. Any player can bat like de Villiers now," Robin Uthappa was quoted as saying by Timesnownews.

Although he’s been away from the Indian team for 7-8 years, Uthappa has observed that now even Indian cricketers are shelving their conservative, risk-averse approach and embracing the new aggressive, attacking form of batting in T20 cricket; he cited the example of current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to underline his opinion.

“Even Rohit Sharma has started to play unorthodox shots. The evolution might not be enjoyed by traditional viewers, but it is highly enjoyable for contemporary viewers,” the CSK batter explained.

If retained, the 36-year-old Uthappa will be seen in the IPL 2023 donning the CSK yellow. He had had a couple of handsome seasons with the franchise since last year.
