Australian skipper Tim Paine has been making a lot of news lately. After sledging R Ashwin during the 3rd test match at the SCG, Tim Paine has now insulted the former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar.
Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar, who is one of the two people the ongoing ‘Border-Gavaskar Trophy’ series is named after, slammed Paine for his behavior from behind the stumps. While lashing out on Paine, Gavaskar had said that his days as the team’s skipper were numbered. He had said:
“Tim Paine was more interested in talking to the batsman rather than his field placing and bowling changes. So, I won’t be surprised if there is a change in the Australian captaincy after the series is over,”
On day 5 of the third test match, the Australian skipper adopted psychological warfare in an attempt to get under the skin of R Ashwin. He was constantly sledging him and was even heard using foul language against R Ashwin. Infact, Paine was also fined 15% of his match fee for showing dissent towards umpire Paul Wilson.
Talking about his verbal banter, Gavaskar had said:
“First and foremost, it was unbefitting of a captain of a national team to be talking about something other than cricket,”
“By all means, you want to have a go at the opposition, you talk about their cricket, you can tell the batsmen he doesn’t know how to play, you can say he is no good. “All those kinds of things are completely acceptable because you’re talking cricket. But when you talk about something else, it shows your frustration. It shows you are not able to bear the fact that the opposition is putting up a fight.”
Later, during a virtual press conference when Tim Paine was asked to comment on the statements of Sunil Gavaskar, the Australian skipper shrugged it by saying that Gavaskar’s opinion doesn’t affect the team. He said:
“He is entitled to his opinion. It doesn’t affect us one iota. It is adding to the Test match, which is great. So Sunny can keep saying what he wants to say at the end of the day, it is absolutely nothing to do with it,”
Well, Tim Paine’s statements haven’t gone down well with the Indian fans, who are now slamming him left, right and center for disrespecting Sunil Gavaskar.
Herem check out the reactions of Twitterati on this:
@TimPaine your unnecessary sledging on play ground against the opposite players is all self- provocative. Do you know how it mentally not only affect the player but also his familes.are you playing the gentlemen’s game? Grow up man! Don’t behave like urchin playing in the street

As the legend Sunil Gavaskar has predicted it might just be Tim Paine’s last outing as Captain and he would even struggle to retain his place in the team.
