Gautam Gambhir Is Getting Flack For His Comment On ‘Rohit vs Ponting’
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has once again found himself at the receiving end of criticism after he made a shocking comment on a comparison between former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and current Indian captain Rohit Sharma.
Rohit Sharma, who is regarded as one of the best white-ball batters of the current generation, is just one century away from equalling legendary Ricky Ponting in the list of batters with the most hundreds in the history of 50-overs cricket. Currently, Rohit has 29 centuries and 9537 runs at an average close to 49 in 237 matches. On the other hand, Ponting finished with 30 centuries and 13704 runs in 375 matches at an average of 42. Speaking about the comparison between the both, Gautam Gambhir ranked the Indian captain higher than the Australian great. Speaking on Star Sports ahead of the second ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Gambhir said:
"The surprising fact is that in the last four or five years he has gotten this many hundreds. Rohit Sharma before the last five-six years was not this consistent. He definitely got about 20 hundreds in the last five-six-seven years,"
Sanjay Manjrekar, who was also present at the studio, was left stunned by Gambhir's remarks. Responding to the statements, Manjrekar said: "You missed that."
Responding to this, Gambhir said something which has taken social media by storm. He said: "No, he is a better player than Ricky Ponting. because Ricky has got a sh** record in the subcontinent,"
Fans were left stunned by the remarks made by Gambhir and soon started trolling the former cricketer for his remarks. There were many who pointed out Gambhir's hypocrisy as it was just two days ago that he claimed that the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli cannot be compared as the rules have changed. After Kohli registered his 45th century, Gambhir said: "You can't compare Virat with Sachin. In Sachin's era there weren't five players inside the 30-yard circle,"
Check out the reactions of fans:
Talking about the numbers, only Sachin Tendulkar (49) and Virat Kohli (45) have more three-figure scores in ODI cricket than Ponting while Rohit (29) is just one behind.
