IND vs WI: India’s batting effort was led by two men – skipper Rohit Sharma and finisher Dinesh Karthik – and was backed up by all the bowlers as the Men In Blue registered a comfortable 68 runs win over the West Indies in the first T20I of the 5-match series on Friday in Trinidad.

Nicholas Pooran won the toss and elected to field first but was made to regret it by the end of the game with the pitch assisting the bowlers more and more in their innings.

Suryakumar Yadav, opening this time, kick-started the tempo smashing 24 runs off 16 balls but India then kept losing wickets with only Rohit Sharma steady at the other end. Sharma notched up his 27th T20I fifty and also became the highest run-scorer in T20Is, surpassing Martin Guptill, but India slipped to a bit of a pickle at 138/6 at the end of the 16th over.

Then came in to bat Dinesh Karthik and the RCB batter unleashed himself on the West Indies bowlers in the last two overs. DK was 14 off 10 balls when the 19th over started. In support of Ashwin, he smashed a flurry of sixes and fours as India took 36 runs in the last two overs to finish on 190, Karthik remaining unbeaten on 41 off 19 balls.

Skipper Rohit Sharma was effusive in praise for his batters as India piled up an above-par total.

“We knew it’s gonna be slightly tough, the shot-making wasn’t easy at the start. The guys who are set need to carry on for longer and the way we finished off the first innings was a great effort. When we finished the first 10 overs, we didn’t think we could get to 190,” Sharma said.

“It was a great effort from the boys and great finish. We gotta try and back the ideas about executing it with the bat. We want to try certain things and all in all I thought it was a great effort. Certain pitches will not allow you to do that and we need to assess how we go about. It is all about backing your skills and strengths.”

With the ball, India were all over the hosts, starting with Arshdeep Singh dismissing Kyle Mayers in the second over, West Indies never got going and the result seemed a foregone conclusion when they slipped to 86/6. Opener Shamarh Brooks was their top scorer with 20 and the entire team could manage only 122.

Three Indian bowlers – Arshdeep, Ravi Bishnoi and R Ashwin – took two wickets each and two others – Bhuvneshwar and Jadeja – took one each.

With India taking a 1-0 lead in the series, fans on Twitter were ecstatic with this comprehensive display, and hailed Karthik in particular for his Man of the Match-worthy performance.
