India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah strengthened his overseas Test record with a superb five-wicket haul in the second innings of the Cape Town Test against South Africa.
This was his 9th five-for in his 32nd Test match and his third in South Africa, which is the joint-most with Javagal Srinath for an Indian bowler in South Africa. Bumrah now has six Test 5-wicket hauls in SENA countries, only one behind Kapil Dev.
His heroics with the ball in the morning session on Day 2 in Newlands helped India win the Cape Town Test match and level the series 1-1.
Despite Aiden Markram’s epic century, and because South Africa had conceded a 98-run first innings trail, South Africa could only hand a target of 79 runs, which India chased down with 7 wickets in hand.
Bumrah had taken Tristan Stubbs’ wicket last evening. Today, he got on a roll right from the first over of the day in which he dismissed Bedingham. He then scalped out Kyle Verreynne, top-edging a pull shot, and Marco Jansen with a superb, sharp return catch. He sealed his five-wicket haul with Maharaj’s wicket. Bumrah also added Ngidi’s dismissal to return with figures of 6/61.
Twitter erupted with praiseful tweets and some memes as Jasprit Bumrah ran through South African batters in Cape Town:

Bumrah was given the shared Man of the Series award with Dean Elgar. Jasprit Bumrah finished with 12 wickets in three innings in the series at an average of only 12.91.
Bumrah said: “This ground will always hold a special place in my heart. The journey started here, always fond memories. Very happy it went well today. That journey started in 2018 – our bowling unit was experienced and we wanted to make an impact. In India, the spinners do a lot more work. Our team is also going through a transition. Lot of bowlers have been changed, the message is the team, keep fighting. We fought it out in the last game as well.”
Always a delight to see Jasprit Bumrah take advantage of conditions and show his leadership as a generational bowler.
