Delhi Capitals’ Head Coach Ricky Ponting recently stirred the debate on Ravichandran Ashwin’s stance on Mankading that left the cricket fraternity stunned.
It was during the 2019 edition of the IPL, in a match against KXIP and RR, when R Ashwin controversially dismissed Jos Buttler using the Mankad. Later, he had found himself at the receiving end of criticism for not playing within the spirits of the game.
Recently, when Ricky Ponting was asked about his views on Mankading, he claimed that he will talk to R Ashwin asking him to not indulge in it, as it is against the spirit of the game. He had said:
“I’ll be having a chat with him about (Mankading), that’s the first thing I’ll do. That is going to be a hard conversation I will have with him. I think, even him, looking back now, probably he’d say it was within the rules and he’s right to do it.”
He added:
“But this is not within the spirit of the game, not in the way I want, at least with the Delhi Capitals anyway.”
However, seems like the statements of Ricky Ponting didn’t go down well with the netizens, who are now slamming the cricketer left, right, and center over his statements. Twitterati also came up with various incidents, where Ricky Ponting was guilty of not playing within the spirits of the game.
The fans are backing R Ashwin on this debate and are claiming that R Ashwin was right within the rules and limits.

Not a right comment from Punter to make it public especially when both going to share dressing room together – if Punter doesn’t like it, it was better to tell during training session or meetings but this might look like a warning.

Ridiculous. So batsmen should just be allowed to gain an unfair advantage by backing up and not face the consequences? The stigma around mankading belongs in the 19th century. It’s allowed under the rules and is fair play

Look who is lecturing about spirit of the game. Kumble had said in the 2008 Sydney test only one team played in the spirit of the game and you were the captain of the other one. Practice what you preach!

Well Mr. Ponting. Glad to hear about spirit of the game from you.
Just remember, claiming a drop catch is also against spirit of the game. Never throw stones while living in glass house.— Susanta Das (@Susanta_1973) August 19, 2020

Oh yeah, Ponting is the right person to talk about the spirit of the game. I hope Ashwin gives him two tight slaps and ends the matter there.
