Two New Franchises Likely To Be Added In The IPL

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League came to an end last week. IPL 2020 turned out to be one of the most entertaining and thrilling season of the IPL so far. Ever since the 13th season came to an end, the talks of new teams in IPL have gained momentum.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce a tender for two more teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) reportedly. Well, as per the media reports, the BCCI is planning about the same for quite some time and is finally geared up to add the new teams to the eight existing franchisees in the cash-rich league.

As of now, the BCCI is keeping things under the wraps and there’s no clarity over the same. As per the speculations the two teams that could be added are – Ahmedabad and Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur or Lucknow. Pune is also on the wish list.

While the BCCI has remained silent on the possibility of adding new teams to the cash-rich league, but the already existing franchises have talked about the same and have expressed their displeasure over the same.

Two New Franchises Likely To Be Added In The IPL

According to the reports, these franchises are worried that the quality of the pool of Indian players would decrease massively if 10 teams are playing instead of 8.

“Teams are already finding it difficult to ensure quality. If we look at most IPL squads, around seven to nine players form the core while two to three players per squad are rotated to find the right balance. Now, if eight franchises are increased to 10, that quality further gets diluted. IPL’s core – the very essence of having a salary purse every year – is to ensure the overall quality of all eight franchises remains somewhere at the same level, regardless of an individual franchise’s spending capacity. If two extra teams draw from the same pool of cricketers at the auction, can the quality be guaranteed,” existing franchises asked as per the Times of India.

Well, it will be interesting to see whether BCCI introduces new teams or not.
