Video: Mark Wood Takes A Fiery Five-For On His Comeback

Mark Wood proved why England missed him so dearly in the losses in the first two Tests of the Ashes 2023 by taking a fiery five-wicket haul in the 3rd Test, at Headingley, which allowed England to come back in the game after a thunderous century by Mitchell Marsh and bowl Australia out for 263 in 60.4 overs on Day 1 after captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to field first under overcast skies.

Mark Wood bowled with high pace, his skiddy deliveries coming on like thunderbolts to the Aussie batters who couldn’t handle his extra speeds – he clocked over 90 mph consistently throughout the day, although for some reason, Ben Stokes didn’t bowl him much in the second session when Mitchell Marsh smoked the other bowlers.

In the first session, Mark Wood bowled a jaw-dropping spell of 6-3-8-1, rattling the leg-stump of Usman Khawaja. He bowled just 3 overs in the second session and went for 21 runs.

Woakes dismissed Marsh just before Tea and Head just after Tea. Stokes was pragmatic this time and brought back Wood to dismantle the lower-order and tail. He got rid of Starc and Cummins in the same over – both lower-order batters unable to handle the incoming deliveries on stumps at high pace. Carey, with just tailenders left to play with, went for a big shot, but with too much pace to handle, only sliced it to cover. Mark Wood completed his five-wicket haul with the wicket of Todd Murphy, chopping onto his stumps.
