On Friday, February 23, Shabnim Ismail, playing her first game for the Mumbai Indians women’s team, made a great start by getting rid of Delhi Capitals’ Shafali Verma, in just the third over of the match. The game took place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Shabnim Ismail Knocks Over The Middle-Stumps To Dismiss Shafali Verma

In the first match of the WPL 2024, Mumbai Indians’ bowlers were very disciplined after Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss. Delhi Capitals’ openers, Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma, found it difficult to score runs after facing a tight first over from Shabnim Ismail. Saika Ishaque, the left-arm spinner, also bowled a tight over following Ismail’s.

Shafali Verma struggled to find gaps in the field and was forced to take risks against Shabnim Ismail during the powerplay. However, a well-placed delivery from Ismail caught Verma off guard, resulting in her middle stump getting knocked over.

Shafali Verma made a disappointing start to her innings, scoring only one run from eight balls. This wasn’t the start she hoped for, especially after her mixed performance in the previous season where she played aggressively. Despite scoring 252 runs in nine innings, she had a strike rate of 184, showing her ability to score quickly.

The team that came second in the first tournament is looking to bounce back from their initial setback. All-rounder Alice Capsey is showing determination to face the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers aggressively and capitalize on the remaining overs of the powerplay.

Capsey, representing the Delhi Capitals, began her innings by hitting a couple of boundaries off her compatriot Nat Sciver-Brunt. Currently, after four overs, the Delhi Capitals are at 16 runs for the loss of one wicket. The Mumbai Indians have already used three bowlers in the match.
