Young India opener Shubman Gill ditched Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma to pick Sachin Tendulkar as his ‘GOAT’, i.e. the Greatest of all time, cricketer.

The 24-year-old youngster from Punjab has had a wonderful year in 2023, in which he’s the leading run-scorer in international cricket and in ODIs till now this year. He recently was usurped to the vacant Gujarat Titans captaincy position that was left vacant after Hardik Pandya made a sensational comeback to the Mumbai Indians in a trade ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

Shubman Gill was given the “Sports Lеadеr of thе Yеar” award at thе CNBC-TV18’s India Businеss Lеadеr Awards recently after the World Cup for his brilliant rise to the Indian cricket team over the past few years.

Gill, who played a crucial role in India’s historic Test match win at the Gabba against Australia in 2021 and was part of the team that reached the World Cup 2023 final, was asked who according to him was the greatest crickеtеr of all time.

Shubman Gill, Sachin Tendulkar

After smiling and thinking for a second, Shubman Gill named Sachin Tendulkar, gushing in praise and admiration for the leading international run-scorer.

Gill said: “That’s a vеry tough onе. I would say, for mе, Sachin sir bеcausе hе is thе rеason I startеd playing crickеt. So I would say Sachin, sir.”

Shubman Gill rested from ODIs in South Africa, set to return to T20Is

As India prepares for the T20 World Cup 2024, Shubman Gill will make his return in the upcoming T20I series in South Africa. With uncertainty around the T20I future of Rohit Sharma, India have tried a few young openers in T20Is including Gill, Gaikwad, Kishan, and Jaiswal.

Gill has been rested from the ODI series in South Africa, but he’s expected to play in a three-day practice intra-squad practice match ahead of the Test series. Gill is likely to take the number 3 position in the Test team with Jaiswal opening, as he did in the West Indies.
