India took 6 quick Sri Lankan wickets in the first innings but the partnership between Kusal Perera and Rangana Herath turned out to be a big headache for the Indian captain Virat Kohli after KL Rahul dropped Perera’s simple catch at second slip off Umesh Yadav. Kusal Perera, who was making his Test debut, took full advantage of the chance given to him by KL Rahul and scored a brilliant counter-attacking fifty that took Sri Lanka out from the follow-on danger. Rangana Herath also played a crucial role in building the partnership and reducing the lead.

Perera finally got out trying to smash Ishant Sharma out of the park. Perera mistimed a slog that went straight into the hands of Virat Kohli at mid-off. Kohli showed his frustration by kicking the ball in the air.
