Vikram Rathour Breaks Silence On Whether Shubman Gill And Shreyas Iyer Will Be Dropped

Shubman Gill, a cricket prodigy, has emerged as the epitome of India’s next-gen talent. His class on the field is undeniable, showcasing impeccable batting skills and a calm presence. Gill’s elegant strokes and solid technique have earned him accolades, positioning him as a key player for the future. Hailed as the peak of the next generation, he combines flair with maturity, impressing fans. With a promising career ahead, Gill’s performances align with the expectations of a cricket-crazy nation. His contributions are pivotal in shaping Indian cricket.

Despite substantial support from team management, Shubman Gill’s Test career hasn’t soared as expected. Struggling to score consistently for India, fans and analysts voice concerns about his place in the team. Entrusted with the critical number 3 position post the WTC Final 2023, Gill hasn’t lived up to expectations, intensifying calls for his removal from the Test squad. The once-promising talent now grapples with performance woes, raising questions about his future in the longer format. As the team reevaluates its strategy, Gill faces a pivotal juncture in his career, needing to translate potential into tangible contributions on the Test stage.

Shreyas Iyer finds himself under scrutiny for recent subpar performances in Test cricket, adding to India’s concerns. The team’s loss in the initial match of the five-game series against England in Hyderabad amplified the spotlight on both Iyer and Gill, who registered disappointing scores. Iyer, once celebrated for his batting performances  in limited-overs cricket, now confronts challenges in the longer format. The pressure mounts as fans and critics question his adaptability to Test cricket. With the series unfolding, Iyer faces a critical juncture to redeem himself and silence doubters, as India looks for stability in its batting lineup.

Vikram Rathour Breaks Silence On Whether Shubman Gill And Shreyas Iyer Will Be Dropped

In a recent press conference in Visakhapatnam, Vikram Rathour acknowledged the presence of inexperienced Test players in the team, urging patience in their development. Rathour emphasized the need for understanding, particularly for young batters like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shreyas Iyer, who are still finding their footing in Test cricket. Expressing confidence in their potential, Rathour assured that with time, these players will evolve and begin delivering significant performances. The statement reflects the coaching staff’s belief in the talent pool and the importance of allowing these emerging players the space to grow and mature in the longer format of the game.

“There are young batters in our team who have not played much Test cricket. So, we need to be a bit patient with them. Batters like (Shubman) Gill, (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and (Shreyas) Iyer will eventually start getting big runs, I’m sure of it,” Rathour said in a press conference on Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Vikram Rathour conveyed that he distinguishes between playing with intent and playing aggressively in cricket. He expressed his desire for the players to adopt an approach of playing with intent, implying a proactive and purposeful mindset on the field. Rathour clarified that it doesn’t necessarily mean playing attacking cricket all the time but encourages the players to seize opportunities to score runs when they arise. The emphasis is on a balanced and thoughtful approach, where players remain alert to chances to accumulate runs without necessarily resorting to aggressive shot-making at every instance.

“There’s a difference between playing with intent and playing attacking cricket. I want them to play with intent. If there is the opportunity to score some runs, they should take it,” Rathour said.
