Virender Sehwag Explained What Went Wrong For CSK In IPL 2022

Virender Sehwag Explained What Went Wrong For CSK In IPL 2022: Four-time champions, Chennai Super Kings is one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League, however, the team is enduring one of the worst seasons in its history. CSK is currently sitting at 9th position in the IPL 2022 points table, with 6 points, having won only 3 of the last 10 games they have played so far.

CSK arrived in the IPL 2022 with a new man in charge as Ravindra Jadeja had replaced MS Dhoni as the captain of the team. With Dhoni still around, the move was appreciated by many as the franchise hinted at a move towards moving on from Dhoni at one point in time.

However, under Jadeja, the team suffered a plethora of defeats to find themselves on brink of elimination from the IPL 2022 playoffs race. Not just this, Jadeja also came under the scanner of critics as he lost his form. Be it with the ball or with the bat, Jadeja has been struggling badly with his form and hasn’t been able to live up to his reputation of being one of the best all-rounders in the cricket world.

While many lauded Jadeja’s move for openly admitting that captaincy pressure was taking a toll on his performances, however, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag is of the opinion that had Dhoni been the captain since the start of the season instead of Jadeja, the franchise would not be in the state they are at present. Speaking to Cricbuzz after CSK was defeated by RCB on Wednesday, Sehwag said:

“The first mistake they did was at the start of the season when they announced that MS Dhoni won’t be captaining and it will be Ravindra Jadeja, it was a wrong decision,”

Sehwag also feels that captaincy played a big role in the initial losses for CSK. He said: “There was no settled playing XI. Ruturaj Gaikwad didn’t score runs in the beginning. They started off poorly, the batters didn’t score runs and from there on, there season was always going to be full of turmoil. If Dhoni had been the captain from the beginning then it would’ve been better and maybe CSK wouldn’t have lost match so many matches,”

He added: “The most important wicket was of MS Dhoni. When Hazlewood comes on to bowl he does not try to bowl yorkers or bouncers. He bowls at a length where the batters have to take a risk. It is not easy to face him with the bounce he gets from his height,”

CSK will now lock its horns against Delhi Capitals on Sunday at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.
