Virender Sehwag Picks 5 Biggest Match-Winner Players In World Cup 2023

Former India opener Virender Sehwag recently picked his 5 biggest match-winners in ODI cricket ahead of the World Cup 2023.

India will host the World Cup 2023, an ODI WC in India after 12 years. Virender Sehwag was a crucial part of the Indian team that won the 2011 World Cup at home. Sehwag used to give India cracking starts in most of the matches during the 2011 WC, which included a blockbuster century against Bangladesh. He was India’s third-highest run-scorer behind Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir.

Virender Sehwag has been collaborating with the ICC in recent weeks to give his insights and opinions in the build-up to the World Cup 2023, which will kick-start on October 5, with the final slated for November 19 in Ahmedabad. The hosts, Rohit Sharma’s Team India, are once again strong favorites to clinch the trophy.

Virender Sehwag names Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in his dream team

Speaking with the ICC, Virender Sehwag picked 5 players from the World Cup 2023 teams who would make it into his Dream ODI XI. With no surprises, he picked three Indian players – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah – along with Australia’s David Warner and New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips.

“They are all talented players and perform well in ODI cricket and they can win the games on their own shoulders. Whenever they click, their team will win,” Sehwag said about his choices.

The World Cup 2023 is very likely to be the last ODI World Cup for Kohli, Rohit, and Warner. While Kohli (2011) and Warner (2015) have won one ODI World Cup each, Rohit Sharma, the current India skipper, is yet to win an ODI World Cup. A World Cup victory at home this year would be the perfect swansong from the ODI format for both Kohli and Rohit.

The ICC added: “Sehwag is looking forward to seeing the quintet in action during the World Cup this year and believes each player is capable of proving a match-winner on their given day.”

India will kick-off their World Cup 2023 campaign on October 8 against Australia in Chennai.
