After Virat Kohli’s flop show at the first ODI  against Australia, VVS Laxman, the former Indian cricketer has opened up about how the number 4 position won’t work for the Indian skipper. Virat Kohli’s decision to demote himself down the batting order has once again resumed the ‘number 4’ debate.

Fans and experts have raised questions about Kohli’s decision of batting at number 4 in order to make space for KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan both in the playing XI of the team. The decision turned out to be a major disappointment as Virat Kohli failed to leave a mark with his performance.

However, it wasn’t the first time that Virat Kohli had failed to deliver at number 4 position. Since the year 2015, Virat Kohli has batted at number 4 position 7 times and he has failed on all 7 occasions.  9, 4 3*, 11, 12, 7 and 16, these were Virat Kohli’s score on those 7 occasions.

The former Indian cricketer, VVS Laxman explained why the number 4 position won’t work for Virat Kohli. During the post-match show of the official broadcaster, VVS Laxman said:

“I don’t see this working. Sachin Tendulkar was the best player the world had ever seen. But he never relished batting at number four.” Laxman added, “You want your best batsman to play maximum number of deliveries and set the game up and finish the game for the team, especially against quality attack. One cannot afford to experiment against this Australian bowling line-up.”

VVS Laxman was not happy at all with the performance of the Indian cricket team in the first ODI. Australian legend, Matthew Hayden, was also present at the show. Talking about the Indian skipper, he said:

“You’ve got someone like Virat Kohli that has played 230-odd one-day matches and 180 of those have been at No.3 and he has scored almost 10,000 runs at that particular position.”

Talking about the match, the Australian cricket team registered a thumping win against team India by 10 wickets. Aaron Finch and David Warner’s unbeaten 258-run stand made their team lead the series by 1-0.
