During the first T20I against West Indies at the Eden Gardens on Wednesday, India captain Rohit Sharma was left annoyed with the on-field umpire when he signalled a wide ball off Ravi Bishnoi to Roston Chase despite there being a noise as the ball passed the batter.
Playing his debut, Ravi Bishnoi was called upon for the 7th over by Sharma. Bishnoi had an erratic start as he sent down three wides in his first over. It could have been four wides if not for the review that Sharma took.
On the fifth legal delivery of Bishnoi’s first over, after he had already conceded three extras, he bowled another googly to batsman Roston Chase. While the ball pitched in line with the stumps, it moved sharply towards the leg side.

Chase prodded forward to tickle it on the leg side, but missed the ball and it brushed on his pads through to wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, who dislodged the bail. The noise was heard clearly; Bishnoi went up in the appeal of a caught behind. However, the umpire signalled it wide, bringing out a reaction of surprise from Sharma.
“Wide Kya De Raha Hai Isko?” an irritated looking Rohit Sharma was heard saying on the stump mic because there was evident noise when the ball went past Chase.
With consultation from Bishnoi, Pant, and former skipper Virat Kohli, who also said he’d heard some noise, Sharma opted to take the review. Meanwhile, the square-leg umpire had also referred the third umpire for a stumping appeal on the same delivery after Pant had dislodged the bail.
Upon review it was found that the ball had brushed Roston’s pads, however, there was no bat involved. The umpire had to reverse his decision of wide making it a dot ball. On stumping as well, Chase’s foot was planted inside his crease.
