While it was jubilation for Smriti Mandhana and RCB and their huge fanbase all around the world, Meg Lanning and Delhi Capitals sank on their knees after they lost a second consecutive WPL final. Following the loss, Lanning got very emotional and burst into tears near the boundary line.
Sunday night at the Arun Jaitley stadium brought incredible moments for RCB as the franchise won its first trophy – across men’s IPL and WPL. However, the same could have been achieved by Meg Lanning had her team won this final, or last year’s when Delhi Capitals women lost to Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians women’s side.
A serial winner in international cricket, Lanning won everything for the Australian women’s team – multiple ODI and T20 World Cup trophies and Ashes trophy. However, her team has failed to clear the final hurdle in the WPL twice in a row.
The second defeat was even more heart-breaking considering Delhi were the best team in the league stage. DC had topped the league stage and made a direct entry into the final, while RCBW had to defeat MIW in the Eliminator.
After the loss, as it all slowly began to sink in, Meg Lanning got emotional and cried. She tried to wipe her tears but eventually couldn’t control the flow. A Delhi Capitals staff member was seen consoling her. This video has gone viral and fans gave Lanning huge support for her role as DCW captain.

Speaking after the loss, Meg Lanning said, “Obviously disappointing not to get it done. Finals are about playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB – you outplayed us tonight. It all happened relatively quickly as it tends to do. As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen. Full credit to RCB, they fought back really nicely and deserved the win. We did a lot right. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. A lot of effort went from a lot of the people. Want to thank the support staff. Cricket is a funny game – you win some, you lose some.”
