England’s opener Jason Roy became recipient of an unlucky distinction yesterday after he became the first batsman in world cricket to be given out obstructing the field in the  the second T20I played at Taunton against South Africa.

Chasing a target of 175, England looked on course to register a victory but it all changed in the 16th over of the match when Jason Roy was given out obstructing the field.

England debutant Liam Livingstone dabbed a shortish ball bowled by South African speedster Chris Morris to the backward point region and Roy who was at the non-strikers end started running for a single. A slight misunderstanding between the English duo gave South African pacer Andile Phehlukwayo a chance, who collected ball and threw it at the non-strikers end.

Phehlukwayo`s throw hit Roy on his boot who in the process of running back had changed his path which prompted an appeal from the South African players led by Chris Morris.

Umpire Michael Gough immediately signaled a dead ball and went upstairs with a soft signal not out but the third umpire after seeing several replays gave Roy out.

Roy’s wicket also gave South Africa a way into the game who eventually won the game by 3 wickets.
