Who Will Be India’s Vice Captain In Test Cricket: Ajinkya Rahane or Ravichandran Ashwin?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s sudden decision to retire from Test cricket has given rise to the question as to who will be Virat Kohli’s deputy in Test cricket. While we all knew Virat Kohli will take over as soon Mahendra Singh Dhoni decides to hang his boots, there’s no obvious choice for the post of Vice Captain.

According a senior BCCI official, the two players who are in with a chance are Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin. A BCCI source in the know of things also said that the board will also look at Ravi Shastri’s view and India’s Team Director’s view will be key in this. The selection committee headed by Sandeep Patil will make their decision will make their decision on the basis of the feedback that they get from Ravi Shastri.

Ajinkya Rahane is most likely to be appointed as India’s vice-captain. Rahane is a very calm and composed character on the field and his calm demeanour will complement Virat Kohli’s aggressive intent. They could prove to be ideal foil for each other.

With 1026 runs in 13 Tests including three overseas centuries, Rahane also has the performance to back his case.

It’s true that Ravichandran Ashwin is a senior member of the team as compared to Ajinkya Rahane, but he hasn’t been able to cement his place in the team, and with growing stature of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, Ashwin is never sure of his place in the team.

The Cricket Lounge believes that Ajinkya Rahane will be the vice captain of India and Test cricket and this announcement will be made soon.

As per BCCI functioning, there is no official vice-captain when India play at home. More than a rule, it’s a convention but there is always a designated vice-captain when they are on overseas tours. India’s next 7 Test matches are at home.
