As the crucial series between Indian and England continues, Indian captain Virat Kohli may be under the sword as there is a possibility of him being suspended for the next Test match that is all set to take place at Ahmedabad.

The incident that will play the cause of Virat Kohli being suspended is his altercation with on-field umpire Nitin Menon on the third day of the second Test. This entire incident happened after a DRS review went the way of the visitors towards the end of the day’s play.

Root survived a scare on the third ball of the final over that was being bowled by Axar Patel. The ball clipped root’s back pad before flying to the gloves of Rishabh Pant. After being adjudged as not out for the appeal that was for caught behind, it was found out that this was a potential LBW as the impact of the cherry was on the timbre, and Root was caught plumb in front of the stumps.

However, the decision for LBW went in Root’s way as well because the ball landed outside the off-stump, and the TV umpire directed to his original decision. Going by ICC’s rulebook, only if the ball is pitching outside the leg-stump line, it is deemed as not out. This is where the entire controversy kicked-off.

Immediately, Virat Kohli trudged up to the umpire and had a heated exchange of words before returning to his position, reacting in an extremely ill-mannered way, completely disapproving of the decision.

Going by the ICC Code of Conduct, Article 2.8 states, “dissent at an umpire’s decision”, and “arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the umpire about his/her decision”.

The punishment for such umbrage can lead to Virat Kohli earning one to four demerit points. Going by the record, Kohli has already registered a demerit point in his kitty and another one will result in him getting banned for a Test or two ODI’s or T20’s.
